The people of Scarborough turned out in their thousands to show their support for the nation’s soldiers.

Residents lined the streets as part of its Armed Forces Day celebrations, the Scarborough Evening News reports.

The turnout was applauded by one of the military’s highest-ranking officials – Vice-Chief of the Defence Staff General Sir Nicholas Houghton.

He addressed the thronging crowds who had come out to welcome home the 1st Battalion Coldstream Guards and the 2nd Battalion The Yorkshire Regiment.

"It is evident that the scale of this warm reception represents the sentiments of all the people of Scarborough," he announced.

He added it is a desire to see the country succeed that can bring the armed forces and the community together on such an occasion.

Soldiers on the frontline in Helmand Province recently expressed thanks to the Royal British Legion Scotland for collecting and sending over more than 400 packages in an attempt to boost morale.
