Police are on the lookout for a man who stole a woman's underwear off of a clothesline and then shouted sexual comments through her letterbox.

The pervert then went onto make lewd comments through a second woman's box, it has been reported.

The incident happened around 2am when the women were disturbed by the man banging on their doors in Wordsworth Street, Hapton.

According to the police, the man made sexually suggestive comments through their letterboxes after they refused to open the door to him, before stealing a pair of knickers from one of the washing lines.

Speaking about the incident, councillor Joanne Greenwood, who represents the area on Burnley Council, said in an interview published by the Mirror: "It sounds laughable but I'm sure it was very frightening and not funny for the two women involved. It's really bizarre.

"I'm sure when the police finally track down this guy, they will find he has issues because to steal underwear is just odd."

As a result of the incident, police have stepped up patrols in the area in order to find the culprit.

The man was wearing dark clothing, although a more detailed description is currently not available.

Detective Sergeant Alisa Wilson, from Burnley CID, said that the incident left the two women shaken and distressed.

She added: "I believe the man responsible may have been in the area for some time and I am appealing for anyone who may have seen him loitering to make contact with police.

"Patrols have been increased in the area and inquiries are ongoing to identify the man."

She has encouraged anyone who may have details about the man to get in touch.

Councillor Jean Cunningham, who also represents Burnley Council advised residents to be extra vigilant and careful, particularly during the night.ADNFCR-2867-ID-801783593-ADNFCR
