Don't you just hate it when you're in the bad books with your missus?

One man who may be staying there for quite some time is Geoff Roberts, who accidentally threw his wife's extensive jewellery collection in the rubbish bin.

Mr Roberts decided to divide the £30,000-value accessories into bin bags, in a bid to fool potential thieves when his house keys and sat-nav system were stolen from his car.

He was worried criminals could track down the property and make off with the uninsured possessions, but as his family were getting rid of belongings in preparation to move house, the bags were accidentally placed in the wheelie bin.

After realising the waste had been collected, Mr Roberts – from Nambour, Queensland – rang his council, but they explained there is little chance of finding the belongings.

"Our landfill receives approximately 1,400 tonnes of waste per week – the equivalent of over half the volume of water in an Olympic swimming pool," a spokesperson said.

It's not long since we heard about a man from Albuquerque, who placed $5,000 (£3,070) on his car roof then forgot about the haul and drove off, losing the cash during his journey.
