Around 80 years ago, several branches of our military went above and beyond the call of duty to defend against heavy attacks by German troops. It is a battle that none of us can ever forget. The valour and bravery shown by our military has guaranteed that we remain safe and free, then and now.

The Ministry of Defence took us on a trip down memory lane with these photos. Looking at our men and allies, you wouldn’t be able to tell they were about to go into battle against the Nazis.

And the Royal Family on Twitter shared this very appropriate quote to mark the day.

RAF remembered the battle as the “greatest test” when it took to the skies 80 years ago to defend the country. It was the sacrifices of the pilots then that helped us keep the enemy at bay. Over 3,000 allied aircrew went up against the Nazis, and according to RAF a fifth weren’t from Britain.

Even the Red Arrows did a spectacular flypast.

The British Army also remembered the men that stood strong.

It is important to remember it wasn’t just the troops that did all the fighting. Britain was able to win because of its advanced radar system. Our investment into science, knowledge and research is what helped gain that extra edge.

Defence Secretary Ben Wallace said: “The Battle of Britain is one of the nation’s greatest and most important victories. For more than 100 years the Royal Air Force has defended the UK, and 80 years ago, alongside our allies, they experienced one of their toughest endeavours. The strength displayed during the Battle of Britain is a testament to the UK Armed Forces and all they continue to do at home and abroad.”

He reminded everyone to be proud of the sacrifices of some of our greatest heroes. #NeverForget
