It is disheartening for us to report that Tom Moore, our favourite World War II veteran, has died after contracting the very virus he helped fight against.

Captain Tom to many, he was able to raise more than £33 million for the NHS at a time when the world was unsure of what to do with itself because of the pandemic. His endeavours earned him a knighthood from Queen Elizabeth II.

“It is with great sadness that we announce the death of our dear father, Captain Sir Tom Moore,” his family announced in a statement to PA Media.

“The last year of our father’s life was nothing short of remarkable. He was rejuvenated and experienced things he’d only ever dreamed of. Whilst he’d been in so many hearts for just a brief time, he was an incredible father and grandfather, and he will stay alive in our hearts forever.”

He has been fondly remembered by all who knew of him. It is a difficult time for us all. The virus has claimed more than 100,000 lives in the country. Captain Tom started his fight against Covid-19 hoping to raise just £1,000. He ended up going beyond his goals. His efforts will continue to be an inspiration for us all in times to come.

The British Army paid tribute to the man who never stopped being a soldier and warrior. They truly don’t make them like him anymore.

He was remembered by the Royal Navy as well.

An inspiration indeed:

He was remembered by all for his courage and strength. The Chief of the General Staff remembered him for his lessons for living a full life, lessons that made their way into the hearts of many.

The Queen also reached out to his family.

The Ministry of Defence also honored him with a message from Defence Secretary Ben Wallace.

When the world froze, Captain Tom continued to do what he did best, push back. He single handedly provided Goliath-level support to the NHS. He taught us all to take destiny by the horns and do what needs to be done.

One of the last posts that went out from his Twitter was this one:

He will continue to be a huge source of motivation for us all.
