An army penpal has met up with a pupil who wants to be a soldier in the future.

Jake Cash is in the US military and currently serving in Afghanistan, the Daytona Beach News-Journal reports.

His mother is a colleague of 11-year-old Jake Warnock's mum and the pair set up the penpal friendship so Mr Cash could offer the youngster an insight into army life.

During a break from service, Mr Cash headed to Edgewater Elementary School to meet Jake in person and to speak to him and his classmates about his job.

"I was more nervous up there – in front of the class – than I am in Afghanistan," he said.

The 11-year-old penpal was particularly interested in hearing about helicopters and other aircraft and he has wanted to work with the equipment and serve as a soldier since he was two years old.

He may well stay in touch with his companion for many years, as the Manawatu Standard recently revealed a duo from Germany and New Zealand recently started writing to each other 60 years after they first struck up their friendship in their teens.
