Prince Philip has stepped down as the Colonel-in-Chief of The Rifles, bringing an end to his military career. He has spent 67 years playing the part of a pillar of constant support to different regiments within the British army. The Duchess of Cornwall will have very big shoes to fill as she takes on the role.

Some believe that the role would have gone to Prince Harry; however, his exit from the Royal family put Camilla in the driving seat.

The Prince has had a special relationship with the military through the course of his career. He holds the record of being the longest-serving consort in all of history. He kept his position despite giving up active duty in 1951.

Assistant Colonel Commandant, Major General Tom Copinger-Symes, spoke at the event. “Your Royal Highness, Colonel-in-Chief… all Rifleman, serving or retired would like to thank you for 67 years of continuous service, support and leadership to the Rifles and our forming and antecedent regiments,” he said.

Prince Philip has commanded several Regiments since 1953 as Colonel-in-Chief, and The Rifles will be his last. The ceremony concluded with the Buglers sounding The Advance and The Rifles Regimental Call, to mark the Duchess taking on her new role.

The British Army also took a moment to thank the Duke for his support.
