An 11-year-old boy has begun leading a writing to soldiers scheme at his local school and expanded the initiative to make it a class project.
Matt Redford took charge of the initiative, which was set up by his brother Jason, the Lake County News-Sun reports.
Pupils are all asked to create a letter that is sent to soldiers on duty in a bid to boost morale and show support.
"I wanted to make them happy and have kids make pictures to send to them," Matt said.
He is particularly interested in getting in touch with injured troops who are spending time in rehabilitation, as the youngster's mother explains Matt wanted everybody to get chance to thank the soldiers for their sacrifices.
It is also a good way for individuals to get to learn about other cultures, as a recent article in the Union suggested penpal schemes allow people to get in touch with companions from around the world.
