Walkers set £100k H4H fundraising target

A group of family and friends are taking part in a 72-mile walk as they seek to raise £100,000 for Help for Heroes (H4H).

They were inspired to set themselves the fundraising target after South Yorkshire soldier Matthew Thornton was killed while serving in Afghanistan, the Star reports.

Matthew's father Mick is coordinating the attempt and he said: "I'm looking forward to speaking to many of those who have joined us over the coming days and [are] raising much needed funds for H4H."

Some of Matthew's colleagues from the Territorial Army's Fourth Battalion The Yorkshire Regiment are involved in the epic trek, which takes them around Barnsley's district boundary and is expected to last for four days.

So far, they have managed to collect £8,275 for the military charity as they seek to hit their impressive target.

Various other events may be organised to help the Thorntons achieve the mark.
