There are many ways to mark Remembrance Day. The vast majority of Great Britain is sure to have fallen silent at 11am on Tuesday 11th of November, while chests up and down the country are adorned with poppies as we commemorate the fallen, and, indeed, the 100th anniversary of the beginning of World War One.
However, one Tesco employee has chosen to pay their respects in a very unique way.
At Tesco Gatwick Extra in Horley on Sunday, shoppers were equally amazed and baffled to see pizzas decorated with the iconic poppy symbol.
Customer Ian Vaughan tweeted a picture of thin and deep crust pizzas featuring a special arrangement of pepperoni, green peppers and olives to make the shape of the flowering plant.
Of course, when the images hit the social media network, the pizzas were soon trending across the world.
There was a mixed reaction to the culinary commemorations, with many praising Tesco for its mark of respect, while others seemed to believe it was a shameless marketing stunt.
However, it seems the poppy-roni pizzas were the idea of a lone Tesco employee, hoping to pay their respects in a slightly different manner.
The pizzas are made fresh in stores daily, so Tesco had little knowledge the doughy dinner delights were hitting the shelves adorned with such decoration.
In response to the social media reaction, the supermarket chain issued a statement on the matter, making it clear that no disrespect was intended.
“Colleagues in stores have been marking Remembrance Sunday in a number of ways and we hope customers see that their intentions in this case were entirely borne out of respect,” it read.
While Tesco seems to have distanced itself from the pizza pandemonium, the images still seem to be making quite a stir online.
Although it was perhaps not the wisest move by the crust creator, it is heartening to see that Remembrance Day is still an occasion that people feel the need to mark in a special way that captures the imagination.
It shouldn’t matter how you remember, just as long as you do.
