Some 38 per cent of Britons would be put off a potential partner if they were bad with money and had debts.
Research by MoneySupermarket.com has found that income plays an important role in determining how successful a courtship will be.
Indeed, 30 per cent of respondents said they would take the financial security of their partner into consideration when deciding whether or not to continue with a relationship.
Kevin Mountford, head of banking at the price comparison website, said: "It seems being sensible with finances, having a secure job and a good grasp of money may improve your chances of finding Mr or Miss Right."
He added the current economic climate has merely intensified these opinions.
Other findings from the study include that 63 per cent of people do not want to date someone who is unreliable with money, while 33 per cent of those questioned cannot trust anyone in debt.
