Lance Corporal Gareth Smith, a member of the First Battalion The Welsh Regiment, was speaking after a thanksgiving service that was attended by the Queen, the Chester Chronicle reports.

Around 240 campaign medals were handed out at the event and over 1,800 servicemen and family members were present to witness the occasion.

The 23-year-old soldier said: "Thanks go out for today. It shows the support for the lads."

He added it is great for the troops to know people back home appreciate what they do.

Lance Corporal Smith has been on two tours of duty in Afghanistan but had to return home following a recurrence of an old injury that required surgery, the source added.

A homecoming parade for the First Battalion the Royal Anglian Regiment is taking place in Southend today (June 17th) to allow residents to show their appreciation for the work being carried out overseas.
