Smile for the cameras!

Have you ever been told you pull a funny face when you're trying to concentrate?

Some people stick out their tongue, while others demonstrate a furrowed brow.

But I reckon you'd struggle to find expressions as bizarre as some of those captured from competitors at the 2011 FINA Championships in Shanghai, China.

While most of the eyes in the room were on the incredible moves being struck by the men and women in the contest, one photographer decided to slow things down and get a snapshot of their faces in incredibly slow motion.

The results are worthy of even the ugliest of gurning competitions.

A common expression involved keeping your eyes squeezed tightly shut, clenching teeth together and frowning – although many of them are far stranger.

In a particularly amusing image, a young male's lips can be seen rising up above his gums, resulting in a toothless expression.

The contest is held from July 16th-31st, so there's still plenty of time to see more peculiar expressions.
