After battling the Taliban in Afghanistan Royal Marine James King returned home to face an even bigger challenge – saving his three-year-old son’s life.

The 29 year old donated one of his kidneys to his little boy and three months later both father and son are in rude health, the Daily Mail reports.

After spending most of his short life in and out of hospital, James Junior feared he may never have a normal life thanks to a kidney infection he developed while in the womb.

His mother told the newspaper that following the transplant, the kid is going from strength to strength.

"This has given him a new lease of life. He is like a different little boy. Before the transplant he got tired on a short walk or after playing for a little while, and with other children he was quiet and withdrawn. Now he’s full of energy and raring to go," she added.

In other news, squadron leader William Waugh recently met his ten-day old son Harry for the first time after a six month tour of duty in Helmand.
