Love seems to be struggling in the recession as the number one spending gripe for UK adults is using money on a partner or spouse.
A Confused.com survey found people do not like having to part with cash when it comes to settling a food bill or getting a taxi.
With the UK currently suffering its worst double-dip recession since the 1950s, romance seems to be struggling.
Second on the list of spending gripes is the costs incurred by having a wedding, while presents for other people's services comes in third.
Nerys Lewis, money expert at Confused.com, said: "Forget for richer for poorer. It seems when times are tight many Brits are simply saying 'I don't' when it comes to bailing out their better half."
This means couples may look for free activities to keep the fires of love burning, such as going for nice long walks or cooking a meal in the house.
