Nobody likes making stupid errors, but the situation is even worse if you find it hard to undo your faux-pas.

So imagine how road painters in the West Midlands felt when a blundering mistake was there for all to see in gigantic capital letters.

They intended to paint the phrase Keep Clear across part of a road in Kingswinford, but instead somebody emblazoned the surface with the words Keep Claer.

Luckily some people have seen the funny side of it all, such as 56-year-old Bill Chapman, who reckons a local resident could be responsible.

"It did make me laugh when I saw it because if you say it in a Black Country accent that's pretty much how it is pronounced," he says.

Dudley Council – which is led by Les Jones – commented on the situation, with cabinet member for transportation Patrick Harley saying they were aware of the mishap.

He confirms the private contracting company will amend the phrase at no extra cost.
