Army penpals may be hoping they encounter a correspondent who they can remain friends with for many years.
This could well be the case for two women who began writing to each other more than 60 years ago and might now get back in touch, the Rutherglen Reformer reports.
Kathryn Hodgins from Ontario, Canada, has been in contact with the news source and said she would like to reconnect with Irene McWhinnie, who used to live in Rutherglen, Scotland.
The pair began writing to each other after the end of World War II and shared experiences, as well as sending the occasional gift.
Now aged 76, Ms Hodgins says: "If I was able to get in touch with Irene again, I would like to say I am sorry it has taken so long to make this search."
A number of penpals go on to share more than friendship together, such as Dave and Nan Cameron, who began writing to each other during the second world war and recently celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary.
