Seeing good drink go to waste can be heartbreaking, but I've never heard of it happening on such a grand sale as that witnessed in a store in Wisconsin, US.

This is because a video has emerged of 6,810 bottles of wine and champagne being destroyed after a massive shelf capitulated.

It happened at Superior Discount Liquor and the damage caused is estimated to be thousands of pounds.

Jodi Berglund, general manager of the shop, said: "It collapsed within seconds. It happened so quickly. It was just an amazing sight afterwards."

Salesman Nick Haen had been working in the store when the structure fell apart and he admitted the whole experience was "unbelievable".

So much plonk was lost in the process, but luckily the store has insurance that will cover the costs.

It comes after the world's biggest wine glass was built last year in Lebanon, which broke a 12-year long record held by a group in Portugal.
