You don’t want to mess with anyone from the British Rugby Team. They’ve managed to successfully go through an intense military survival training ahead of the Rugby World Cup, being held in Japan this year.

Locked away from the outside world – quite literally – the players had to focus on surviving and learnt everything from building a shelter from whatever materials they could find to learning how to start a fire. That’s some intensity off field, we can’t wait to see what happens on field!

The entire training was conducted under the supervision of survival instructors who kept a close watch on the team to see whether they were working together and providing each other the support they needed.

In expected service-personnel style, playing rugby was treated as something just as brutal as surviving the wilderness by the instructors. To add to this, the whole training was held at a secret training camp on the Royal Air Force base.

Of course, what’s a training at a secret military base if the participants don’t get a bit of a shock? Turns out, none of the players knew where they were headed and why they were headed there when they were taken to the small piece of woodland. Imagine their surprise when they found out what they had signed up for!

While it may sound very gruelling and tough enough to make anyone quit (we’d frankly be on the plane back home within an hour), the players actually seemed to enjoy the experience.

England fly-half George Ford said: “It’s been challenging, and stuff like this is great for us to take into what we’ve got coming up in the next few weeks.”

The RAF folks also seemed to have enjoyed the whole experience. “It was the ultimate bonding experience. It was also a test, as every day is in the World Cup build up,” said a RAF spokesperson.

This probably takes the whole ‘dreams don’t work if you don’t’ stance to a whole new level. Imagine signing up to play a sport and then being thrown into the middle of a survival boot camp.

With all this training, we’re pretty sure the World Cup is coming home. Following England’s latest victory in the Cricket World Cup, it looks like this might just be the year for the country’s athletes.
