Marathon football event held for Help for Heroes

A marathon football event has been held in an effort to generate cash for injured soldiers.

The 24-hour tournament took place at Shepprton school and more than £2,500 was raised through the spectacle, Staines News reports.

It was kicked off by deputy mayor of Spelthorne Sam Budd and lasted from 14:00 GMT on Saturday December 11th and ended at the same time the following day.

Around 96 games were played – with 704 goals scored in total – by more than 300 pupils, friends and staff at Halliford School, comprising around 80 five-a-side teams.

Headteacher Philip Cottam noted: "The enthusiasm and energy from everyone involved was great, especially those who did the difficult hours between 01:00 and 05:00."

He added there was an average of one goal scored every two minutes.

Superstar footballer David Beckham recently praised the contribution of the British armed forces while attending the Sun's Millies 2010 awards, which aims to recognise the work put in by the military over the year.
