For many people, gardening is a gentle pastime to do on a sunny day.
However, Stuart Frain had a rather more gruesome experience when using his circular saw to cut some wood outside his house.
His left arm was dragged under the device and sliced off below the elbow, with only skin left keeping it attached.
But rather than panic, Mr Frain showed some real gumption, held the limb in place and ran off looking for help.
Eventually he found two walkers and instructed them to make a tourniquet out of a stick and a dog leash to stem the bleeding.
After a seven-hour operation at Wythenshawe Hospital in Manchester, surgeons were able to successfully reattach the arm.
Consultant plastic surgeon Vivien Lees said it was amazing that Mr Frain was able to stand the pain for so long, while the man himself was able to quip that his arm looks ugly now.
