A massive 2,250 people recently came together to create a Guinness World Record-breaking human poppy – the biggest ever seen.

The giant poppy activity, which took place at Sixth Form College Farnborough in Hampshire on May 2nd, was to mark the centenary of the First World War and give support to The Royal British Legion.

People of various ages took part in the activity, including sixth form students and members of staff and Aldershot Garrison personnel.

More than 70 soldiers – members of the Military Police, Guards and Gurkhas – as well as Colonel Charlie Lambert, garrison commander, took part in forming the giant flower.

Rushmoor Borough Council representatives were also on-hand to take part, as were people representing The Royal British Legion. Nursery and school children and people from local corporate entities were among those involved, too.

"Well done to Sixth Form College Farnborough and Aldershot Garrison for creating this new world record," commented Royal British Legion area manager for Hampshire and Dorset, Jim France.

He said the charity is thrilled that it was decided to make a large scale poppy in the activity, particularly during "this poignant year as the nation commemorates the centenary of the First World War".

He expressed gratitude to Farnborough locals for their support for the event and Legion donations.

Cash gathered is set to help the charity carry on giving practical support to veterans and serving personnel, he added.

Recently, the Legion asked people to make donations of military-linked memorabilia items to be sold off at charity auction.

Pieces from any conflict are being accepted, with their sale raising cash to help the charity as part of The Great Centenary Charity Auction.

James & Sons is set to host several auctions, the first on September 21st, and is hoping to raise £1 million to give to the charity.ADNFCR-2867-ID-801724127-ADNFCR
