The joy of having a penpal is receiving a letter from someone you have a relationship with.
People can build up a friendship without ever meeting and it is a great way for armed forces members to stay in touch with individuals back home.
Those who are keen to interact with British soldiers can consider this method.
According to an article in the Uxbridge Gazette, the "excitement [is] palpable" whenever people get new correspondence.
"Brothers and sisters would want to help you open it, parents would want to read it, but all you wanted to do was hide and enjoy your letter," the paper observed.
Regardless of the quality of the content, the delight from receiving a letter is great.
It comes after Harvey Whitman told the News Shopper that he is keen to track down his penpal from 42 years ago, as the former military man wrote to Maureen Lynam during the Vietnam War.
