Firefighters ‘allowed to sprint to their engines’

When you think of firefighters, images of life saving antics come to mind as they battle against time to get infernos under control.

However, it seems the job is not as rock and roll as some TV shows make it out to be, as until this week, those working in Greater Manchester had to walk briskly to their fire engines to start a rescue mission.

Rules introduced in the 1990s meant they were not allowed to run towards their vehicles in case they fell and hurt themselves, the Daily Mirror reports.

However, these regulations have been relaxed in the nine highest-risk areas in Greater Manchester, so firefighters can respond to incidents quicker.

Speaking to the paper, the Fire Brigades Union agreed to the change as long as it does not compromise the safety of fire crews.

It's good to see that common sense has finally prevailed on this issue, as there is something wrong about a bunch of firefighters walking to an engine in an emergency.
