A special award has been presented to a veteran who has committed his life to supporting the Royal British Legion's (RBL's) lifeline work.
The Evening Chronicle named former sergeant Ian Proud its Armed Forces Champion at the first ever Community Champion awards.
He was honoured after impressing judges with his work creating a Remembrance Garden at West Denton Primary School and educating youngsters about the importance of remembrance.
Mr Proud also helped the pupils to record a charity music album, with the proceeds from the sale going to the RBL.
Speaking at the awards ceremony, Mr Proud, who served with the 72 Engineer Regiment for five years, said: "By winning this award I hope it will help to showcase the outstanding work the Legion does for our armed forces community and their families."
He added the RBL is "just as important" for today's servicemen as it was more than 90 years ago.
