Driving challenge to raise Help for Heroes cash

A fundraiser is hoping to break a world record and generate fund for Help for Heroes at the same time.

Mac Mackenney has taken on a challenge to drive more than 10,000 miles – from London to Cape Town in South Africa – in less than two weeks, Get Reading reports.

The adventurer is aiming to beat the current record for the journey, which is held by Eric Jackson after he completed the excursion in a Ford Cortina GT in 1963, of 13 days, eight hours and 48 minutes.

Mr Mackenney will be accompanied by two teammates for the journey – his younger brother Steve and friend Chris Rawlings.

He warned: "Because this is a speed record, if you forget something important, then that’s it – game over."

The Western Mercury recently reported the Hovabout service – which offers participants a lift in a hovercraft down Burnham beach – is donating some of its profits to Help for Heroes.
