A GP who has sported a beard for 40 years is having it shaved off to show his support for soldiers and raise money for Help for Heroes.
Doctor Herry Ashby wants his friends, family and members of the community to make donations to the charity before he goes for the chop on May 20th, the Sussex Express reports.
"As news rolls in remorselessly of our courageous servicemen and women being killed or seriously wounded, I feel all of us should try to help them as best we can," he says.
He first grew his beard after a trip to Africa in 1971 but decided to keep the facial hair from then on, meaning his wife has never seen him without it.
Dr Ashby has placed collection boxes around the village of Newick and he says he hopes people "will respond generously" so he can raise as much money as possible for Help for Heroes.
Another unique mission for the charity is being carried out by Joe Whitelegg, Phil Morrison and Bob Steele, who have pledged to give up alcohol for an entire year in honour of the cause, the St Helens Star reported.
