A bus driver is to refrain from telling a single joke throughout the month of December in an effort to generate funds for brave troops wounded in combat.

Dave Gerrard, known as something of a funnyman among his friends, has vowed not to make a gag over the four week period – and the money he raises will be donated to Help for Heroes, Stourbridge News reports.

The 66-year-old claimed he will find it hard to resist the temptation to make a wisecrack during the challenge.

He said: "I'm known as a bit of a joker and love making people laugh everyday so it will be tough keeping quiet for a month."

The lads serving in Afghanistan are doing a tremendous job, Mr Gerrard stated, adding he wants to play his part in supporting them.

Seonaid Holsgrove, a 21-year-old student at Strathclyde University, recently set up a society at the learning institution to generate cash for the Help for Heroes cause.
