Online dating may have previously been associated with a certain type of person – perhaps somebody young who was not looking for anything serious.

But stereotypes have changed dramatically during recent years and it is now the older generation who are among the keenest users of such sites, the Associated Press reports.

According to the news agency, it is the "baby boomers" who are causing a swell in the number of visitors to these platforms.

John Valentino, aged 57, is just one example of a happy customer from this age bracket.

He met his wife Debbie, a former Marine, via the web, although Mrs Valentino explains she had to point out exactly what she was looking for.

"I would say why are you writing me? I'm looking for somebody my own age. I made it very clear in my profile," she says.

It is also a good idea for people to note down all their good points before forming their profile, as relationships expert Kailen Rosenberg recently told the Huffington Post this will allow individuals to focus on their strengths.
