Online dating sites allow single solders and others to explain exactly what they are looking for in a relationship.
Historian Pamela Haag has published a new novel entitled Marriage Confidential: The Post-Romantic Age of Workhorse Wives, Royal Children, Undersexed Spouses and Rebel Couples and spoke to the Huffington Post about how her research has shed some light on relationships.
"We are more likely to find mates through online dating, which means we can use screening instruments to pinpoint the exact characteristics we want," she said.
Ms Haag explained the internet can affect many other elements of a marriage too, as some people find they enjoy using social networking sites to flirt with others.
The importance of the web in many people's lives was recently highlighted by research from esure, which discovered some 61 per cent of people would have withdrawal symptoms if they did not use devices such as computers, smartphones and e-readers.
