Those who write to soldiers could find they get in touch with individuals from all over the world and learn about different cultures.
This was certainly the case for those participating in a scheme initiated by the chair of the Nevada County Italian Cultural Foundation in California, who encouraged students in local schools to write to their peers in Limano, Italy, the Union reports.
Valentina Parkman helped to make the connections a reality and says participants have benefited greatly from the programme.
One individual remarked: "With penpals, you get to make friends all over the world."
And another said: "This makes me want to learn more about their culture. It makes me want to visit them."
Army penpals could also find their writing skills improve due to such connections, as Mount Vernon News recently claimed those involved in a regional penpal scheme are learning the importance of being able to compose a legible letter.
