Online dating may be considered by some as a way to present a dishonest picture of oneself, but a relationships expert believes the opposite is actually true.
Professor Aaron Ben-Ze'ev has carried out research into the matter and discovered just how honest people actually are on the web, the Guardian reports.
He says this is a result of lengthy online conversations that allow individuals to get to know each other.
Doing so means it is not possible to lie "about constitutive personal features, such as a sense of humour, wittiness, and personal interests", as each quality will become evident as time goes on.
"Online relationships encourage many people to present a more accurate picture of their true self," Professor Ben-Ze'ev remarks.
This may explain why the method is so appealing to many people, as recent figures from the Scotsman found two-thirds of UK singletons have tried internet dating as a way to find a new partner.
