A soldier's bid to raise money for the Help for Heroes charity with a long distance walk has received a boost from a former winner of the reality series Big Brother.

Sophie Reade has become the first sponsor of 33-year-old Michael Collins, a member of the Royal Welsh Regiment, who plans a trek the length of Offa's Dyke – including plans to sleep in a one-man tent along the 177-mile route – the Leader Live reports.

The Dyke was built in Saxon times as an ancient boundary between England and Wales, passing close to where Mr Collins lives in the Cheshire town of Nantwich, which is also Sophie Reade's home town.

"It's going to be cold and tough but nothing compared to what the lads are facing out there in Afghanistan," the soldier commented, having completed a tour of duty there in September.

Other women raising cash for Help for Heroes recently include Real Stoke Girls, a group of 65 women from the city aged between 16 and 80 who have posed nude for a calendar, the BBC reported last month.

By the end of October, sales of the product had already raised over £3,000 for the cause.
