Single soldiers looking for love might want to turn to their parents when it comes to relationship advice.

Writing for the Huffington Post, Natalia Brzezinski noted one of the premises of US television show The Batchelor – that mums and dads can play a prominent role in deciding upon a suitable mate – is a wise one.

The journalist observed parents know their offspring best, having raised them for all their lives and observing their personality and likes and dislikes since birth.

She compares this with the opinions of friends, who can often over-analyse a date and immediately pick up on any negative aspects.

Ms Brzezinski added friends can even become jealous if a new boyfriend or girlfriend causes substantial changes to a group dynamic.

Dr Larry Rosen, a professor of psychology at California State University-Dominguez Hills, recently noted online dating is becoming more widespread as the internet is now central to many peoples’ everyday lives.
