The Military Wives Choir has its sights set on another Christmas number one this year, thanks to its single Home For Christmas. The song is a reworking on the classic carol, Hark! The Herald Angels Sing with the lyrics altered to reflect the lives of modern military families.

A total of 1,007 singers from 69 different Military Wives Choirs in the UK, Cyprus, Bahrain and Germany have joined forces to create the emotional single, which is also on their Christmas album.

The money raised from the sale of their single will go to the Military Wives Choirs Foundation, which helps women in the Armed Forces community to connect with others and learn new skills. The foundation aims to offer support to women in military families who move around frequently and have to deal with a loved one being deployed.

If the choir manages to reach number one for Christmas, it will be the second time it has done so. Back in 2011, the Military Wives Choir gained the Christmas number one, beating the X Factor winners to the coveted top spot thanks to their single Wherever You Are.

The success of this single is what helped to set up the Military Wives Choir Foundation, which now supports 74 choirs around the world, with more than 2,500 women being involved.

Early figures show that the Military Wives Choir has edged into the lead over its former mentor, Gareth Malone. The choir master helped set up the group and mentored it to the top spot previously, which he may be regretting now as single Only You is currently in hot competition with Home For Christmas.

Rosie Dow, the director of the Military Wives Choir, said: It's going well so far. It's been a steady start and I think it's well ahead now.

“Gareth is our friend and patron so it’s been great fun taking him on. He hasn’t been involved in this campaign or album. But the women think it’s funny we are going up against him. They love him. We hope we beat him – in a fun and friendly way of course.”
