The Queen has honoured military heroes from one of Britain’s most prestigious schools by unveiling a plaque to remember them.
Her Majesty visited Eton College to mark the 150th anniversary of the establishment of its Combined Cadet Force (CCF).
While at the college, she met young cadets hoping to do their bit for the country should they ever be called upon.
After unveiling the plaque, Queen Elizabeth spoke to those who had gathered and said that the names on it had done a great service to Britain and its armed forces.
"This plaque represents the pinnacle of the concept that guides this school – the concept of service. Some of the names here will belong to the families of people here today, including me," the Maidenhead Advertiser reports her as saying.
The Eton College CCF was founded as a volunteer battalion of the Oxford and Buckinghamshire light infantry when it was feared that Napoleon III was threatening to invade Britain.
