First dates are always an awkward affair, so looking and feeling your absolute best is a must.

With this in mind, you might just want to splash out on a new hair style for the occasion, with new research by Toni & Guy showing just how much women love to spend on their curls.

The average lady spends £37 a month on her hair, which works out as £439 a year and more than £14,000 between the ages of 18 and 50.

Blondes pay out the most each year, with their bill coming in at £506, while redheads cough up £442 every 12 months.

Sacha Mascolo-Tarbuck, global creative director at Toni & Guy, said: "Hairstyle and colour is important to many women and that is reflected in the amount of money they are willing to spend on it."
