A cat has become the victim of a strange attack in New Zealand after its fur was shaved and a swastika drawn on its back.

Jess and James McGriffin noticed their feline companion Turbo felt a bit different when they started to pet him recently, and upon closer inspection it was found that someone had carried out a bizarre ritual.

The cat's whiskers had all been cut off, his back, forehead, legs and other patches had been shaved and the Nazi symbol had been drawn on to his skin.

"It had obviously just happened. I just cried. It's so horrible. I just couldn't believe it," Ms McGriffin told the Stuff website.

She initially suspected it may have been a racist attack against her husband, who is from the Philippines, but she now thinks it was the work of children who carried out a nasty joke.
