People who are looking for love have been advised that there are no more risks or dangers associated with online dating than there are in more traditional methods of seeking a partner.
The Crime Victims Institute at Sam Houston State University has explained that while there is a risk when dating anybody, it is no higher when meeting an individual via the internet, reports the Houstonian.
In fact, regardless of how people first meet each other, the potential for something to go wrong remains roughly the same.
Molly Smith, one of the doctoral student researchers behind the study, said: "Use your better judgement when going on dates with anyone, regardless of how you met them. Even if you have met someone in person, you are still at risk of victimisation."
There are, of course, many advantages to online dating, such as the chance to meet people that would otherwise have been inaccessible.
