Bridgend-based military charity Healing the Wounds is seeking to take over a veterans hospital.
It is hoping to get permission from health bosses to assume control of the Clydach Hospital after it was announced the facility may close, the South Wales Evening Post reports.
Kevin Richards, founder of the charity, observed the site would be perfect for the kind of work they carry out, which includes helping ex-servicemen and women struggling with post-traumatic stress disorder.
"If we can take it over, it will be safeguarding it for the men who lost their lives in the first world war," he added.
Clydach councillor Roger Smith has backed the initiative and the third sector group is now looking to secure enough funding to make the project a reality.
Healing the Wounds seeks to help Welsh soldiers who have been affected by frontline duty and among its patrons are actor Michael Sheen and rugby union referee Nigel Owens.
