New museum to highlight the role of the Welsh soldier

Welsh soldiers have made a massive contribution to the British army and a new museum will celebrate their history with some brand new exhibitions.

Firing Line: Cardiff Castle Museum of the Welsh Soldier is a new £1 million facility which will take over the entire first floor of the castle and trace the history of Welsh troops over the last 300 years.

The project is a joint collaboration between The Royal Welsh and 1st The Queen’s Dragoon Guards and will open its doors to the public on February 22nd.

There will be lots of special exhibitions taking place over the coming months, including Out of Africa, which documents battles against the Zulus, and Keeping the Peace, which focuses on missions in Bosnia, Burma and Lebanon.

Director Christopher Dale told the BBC that the facility will show some of the amazing things Welsh troops have done around the world.

"We’ll give our visitors an understanding of why ordinary people are prepared to do extraordinary things and carry out outstanding acts of bravery," he stated.
