The British Services Antarctic Expedition 2012 is hoping to raise £10,000 for Help for Heroes (H4H).

Those taking part are looking to commemorate the route travelled by Captain Robert Scott on his ill-fated expedition to reach the South Pole.

A group of ex-military personnel will be taking part in the adventure, but they will not seek to recreate the exact route taken by Captain Scott, instead adhering to the spirit of it.

Darren Foote, a former sergeant in the Royal Military Police and Gulf War veteran, told the Gwent Gazette he is delighted to be part of the challenge.

A spokesman for the trip stated they are hoping to collect cash for "modern day military heroes" and added the whole process would not have been possible without the help of benefactors and sponsors.

The 24 people who take part on the expedition are not expected to return to the UK until the end of February 2012.
