A soldier is to undertake a mammoth charity bike ride in order to raise funds for Veterans Aid (VA).

Captain Edouard Plunkett has served in Afghanistan, Iraq and Cyprus during his time in the armed forces, but he will undertake the expedition in order to collect as much money as possible, according to the Glynstrong blog.

He will be riding from Gibraltar to Hereford and is set to cover 1,583 miles in the process.

Captain Plunkett noted the "nature of the charity" is what appeals to him, as it does a lot of work that is "lost on most people".

"They think about the 'here and now', see the casualties of current conflicts, not the welfare of the individuals' long term in life," he remarked.

Dr Hugh Milroy, chief executive officer of VA – which is partnered with the Scottish Veterans' Residences – said there are currently more than five million veterans in the UK.
