A grandmother is set to complete a parachute jump to raise money that will go towards an injured soldier's wedding and Help for Heroes.

Sherri Smith says she was inspired to complete the mission – despite being scared of heights – after meeting soldier Alex Stringer, the Basildon Recorder reports.

Mr Stringer had been serving in Afghanistan when he was injured by a roadside bomb and lost his left leg, his right leg below the knee and his left arm below the elbow, as well as sustaining other major injuries.

"Alex is inspirational. He never complains and isn't bitter. I just want to do something for him," says Ms Smith, a community midwife.

The soldier is set to get married next year and the grandmother hopes to raise money to contribute towards the big day, as well as supporting Help for Heroes.

Another scheme to earn money for the organisation is being led by Men's Health magazine and will see a range of Action Man dolls given a fashion makeover and then sold on eBay.
