The bravery of one solider has been reported as he seeks to become a pilot despite losing a leg in Afghanistan.

Matthew Wilson lost the limb after a homemade bomb went off and his story may inspire many, including those who have army pen pals.

According to the Daily Mail, the 24-year-old Lance Corporal has been awarded a scholarship that will allow him to pilot a light aircraft.

He told ITV News: "If you'd told me 12 months ago when I was laying in a hospital bed that I'd be flying a plane then I'd have laughed at you."

It represents the latest step in his attempts to recover from the tragic incident, which occurred last summer.

Mr Wilson added being able to think about getting out in the air is enough to keep him going as he seeks to get his life back on track.

His story comes after it was revealed a soldier stayed up for 24 hours in order to raise money for Help for Heroes.
