Service personnel on duty in Afghanistan showed their support for Help for Heroes by running a half-marathon relay race.

Members of the Helmand Provincial Reconstruction Team, the United States Marines Corps, the Afghan National Security Forces and personnel based at Headquarters Task Force Helmand all joined in the charity event.

Teams of four were created and each one had to run two laps of the base and each entrant completed more than three miles altogether.

They paid a fee to get involved and the sum was donated to Help for Heroes.

Corporal Sean O'Connor was a member of the winning team from 216 (Parachute) Signal Squadron and says: "I enjoyed the race as it was well organised and was run in good spirits.

"An added bonus to helping to raise money for Help for Heroes was that we won the event."

The Nottingham Post recently revealed ex-army sergeant Richard Porter is set to take on a marathon, cycle sprint and two triathlons this year in a bid to earn funds for the charity.
