Argentina will be making a monumental mistake if it tries to take back the Falklands, the former head of the SAS has claimed.

General Sir Peter de la Billiere, who was in charge of the unit during the 1982 war, said the South American nation will lose badly if it decides that military action is needed to seize the islands.
Argentina is furious that a British oil rig has started digging for black gold in the waters off the Falklands and is putting pressure on Britain to give them up.

However, Sir Peter said that soldiers will defend the island with all their might should Argentina decide force is necessary.

"We have demonstrated our intention to fulfil the islanders’ wishes and support them if they are threatened. I can see no reason or justification or political will in the UK to do anything other than that," he added.

In 1833, the British re-established the Port Louis settlement and the islands have been part of British overseas territory ever since.
