Members of the public got the chance to meet soldiers who have been on tour of Afghanistan.

Troops are parading through Carlisle, the BBC reports, to celebrate the 1st Battalion, the Duke of Lancaster's Regiment's return from their tour.

Major Robbie Davies explains it is important to offer people this chance to meet soldiers, as members of the armed forces can see how much support is available.

He says: "These events are very important because it important that the boys see the feelings of the people at home.

"People seem genuinely pleased to see the soldiers on the street."

The regiment regularly recruits in Carlisle, so it may also be a chance for people considering a career in the armed forces to get an insight into the work involved.

Soldiers in Maidstone were recently treated to a royal visit from the Queen, who greeted troops from the Queen's Gurkha Engineers.
