A number of extra British troops are to be deployed to Afghanistan to assist in the war effort in the country, it has been revealed.

Defence secretary Liam Fox told the House of Commons around 300 troops will be sent to account for the summer fighting season, the Metro reports.

Servicemen and women from the Cyprus-based Theatre Reserve Battalion are to join those stationed at Helmand province until October.

Mr Fox explained the soldiers would accompany the UK-led Task Force Helmand, along with Danish and Estonian allies in the central population belt.

Prime minister David Cameron commented: "This is the time to get the job done and the plan we envisage makes sure that we won’t be in Afghanistan in 2015."

It was recently revealed more than 600 troops from the Third Battalion (Staffords) Mercian Regiment will be sent to the country early next year to add reinforcement to the soldiers overseas.
