Three heroic soldiers have been presented with the Military Cross for their services in Afghanistan.

Captain Tresham Gregg, Lieutenant Sergeant Matthew Turall and Corporal Paul Mather were given the medals at a ceremony held in Buckingham Palace, the BBC reports.

The award is handed to those who have shown exemplary gallantry during active operations against an enemy on land.

Corporal Mather was recognised after requesting air support despite being injured when he and his colleagues came under attack from grenades in Helmand province.

The Ministry of Defence commented: "He focused solely on delivering the accurate fire support needed to extract his comrades from danger – acts of the upmost professionalism and selflessness."

Captain Gregg was honoured for outstanding leadership and Lieutenant Sergeant Turrall was acknowledged for protecting Afghan children.

A number of Royal Air Force crews were recently presented with Operation Herrick medals for bravery shown in Afghanistan while under fire from rockets and machine guns.
